The distribution and transfer of scientific insights majorly happens through text. Books and research papers are obvious examples, but term papers and theses (BA, MA, and Staatsexamen) are an equally fundamental part of scientific practice. As such, they are subject to certain rules that make them qualify as scientific in the first place. It is these rules that we will look at (and discuss!) in class. After making our minds up on what is scientific about scientific work, we will then see how scientific reasoning can (and must) inform our writing, both in terms of style and structure. Lastly, we will turn the spotlight on the more formal aspects of academic writing — most notably on citation and referencing, as they, too, contribute to an academic text’s scientific nature. (This part of the class will specifically be based on the stylesheet of the English Linguistics Department, though many general ideas will be of value to anyone interested!) Students are encouraged to bring along (and use) their own work. We will also reserve a fair amount of time for providing individual counsel at the end of day two.
